Seven Questions for Dallin Chase Designer Jason Cauchi

Jason Cauchi designs clothes women actually want to wear. And that’s why his contemporary collection–named Dallin Chase after his two eldest children–is such a hit with a certain type of girl. You know, the type who doesn’t want to look too trendy, too forced, too “tries-too-hard.” (So essentially, everyone.)

I, for instance, fell in love with one of Jason’s chambray dresses a few years ago, and have been devoted ever since. Recently, I caught up with Jason to chat about his latest resort collection–and some other less serious stuff.

Fashionista: What’s up with resort? How is it different from your last collection and different from your next?
Jason Cauchi: Resort is my favorite season to design. We created the perfect wardrobe. We did great knit cardigans with a little bit of lurex and shine. The entire collection is bright and cheerful with nostalgic elements, like an easy crochet tank dress or our bread and butterfly print. Resort is a chance to escape into your clothes for a holiday, or to dream about the coming spring, so the clothes are more playful and light. For Fall, I tend to reference the city a lot and layer in pieces that could work for work or a weekend in the country. The perspective is totally different. Moving into Spring, the collection takes references the new year and a new mix of things to wear. Spring is a balance of escape and function–the ease of summer dressing allows us to add details and use color in unexpected ways.

How did you choose the model in your look book? She’s really unique. Our photographer, Peter Stanglmayr, and I had a go-see and Nicole Lichtenberg (who’s with Elite) really stood out. She had a warm personality and was excited about traveling to Singapore later this summer–and since our resort collection was all about travel, it felt like a fit! She fit the clothes perfectly and her casual attitude fit the idea of the Dallin Chase customer.

You’re married with three kids. Does your wife wear Dallin Chase exclusively? Not yet! I am working on it. I still need to make jeans. Grace wears Dallin Chase dresses and tops all the time. Her favorite pieces right now are the stripped Carter tank and the Greg dress. She can’t wait for the new leather jackets to come in. She wore them all winter.

What’s the best part about designing for women? Talking to them. We have this idea that we dress as a way of expressing ourselves, but when I talk to women about what they like and what they want never matches up. I get to look from the outside and suggest beautiful clothes. My wife, my sister, mom, and the women I work with are all a great help to me.

What were you up to before you launched Dallin Chase? I had been consulting for a label and Grace was pregnant with Merrit (my third child).

Ever think about doing a Dallin Chase collection for kids?Everyday…we did two capsule collections last year and it was great. It is in the pipeline…the girls keep asking me to make them stuff!

Okay, let’s forget about clothes for one second. If you had to pick one meal that would please everyone in your family, what would it be? Keeping in mind that we have a 7, 6 and 4 year old, it’s hard to make everyone happy all the time. But my wife is an amazing cook, and her old school homemade sauce with meatballs and Italian sausage over spaghetti is something all of us love.

Happy Thanksgiving to everyone! I had a quiet couple of days with my family, well the scrabble game against my brother got a bit loud, but it's been nice hanging out at home. I did some vintage shopping in Old Town Twin Falls. There is an antique shop there and from the front it looks like your typical store of ceramic antiques etc. but they have a basement full of clothing, it's amazing. So a couple of friends and I spent Wednesday doing that.

I am thankful for my family, my modeling family and friends, all my teachers, school, a good education and the fact that I was able to do some good with modeling this holiday season and feed some families. Giving is always the best reward, better than anything you could buy for yourself. Wherever you are in this world (yeah you in Austrailia, so jealous) I hope you have

a Happy Thanksgiving break!

The Denim Issue

Since 2003 the Blaine County Hunger Coalition has worked to end hunger in our community by

providing wholesome food to those in need and by promoting solutions to the underlying causes of hunger through collaboration, education and advocacy. Through programs like their Backpack

Club, Infant formula Initiative, Mobile food bank and summer food program, no child has to ever go to bed hungry.

John Crotty's "the denim issue" fashion show was a huge success. Thank you John for allowing me to be a part of this show and bless so many families this holiday season.

Show packages are out and I thought I'd share my card. As a "newbie" I was invited back to NY

for fashion week as long as it worked out with school etc. I am here and my average day goes as follows. Wake up dress for castings, clean (means no make up, hair washed the night before), eat

breakfast, go to casting, check in at agency, practice walking, go to more castings, walk at agency,

more castings, eat on the go or sometimes stop and eat lunch, more castings, go to agency, get feedback, walk some more (I love walking w/Mac, he's so nice), go back to room, eat,call home, go back to room, shower, do homework, check tomorrows schedule of castings, sleep. You can be requested for a casting but you are sent to most castings by the agency, if it was a request the agency makes sure I know that. To break it down for you, there are around 65-70 shows for fashion week, to book a show I go to castings, so lets say for example I go to a casting for OH lets just say Jill Stuart, I don't meet Jill Stuart, there is usually a casting director there that casts for Jill Stuart and a few other designers, if the casting director likes me for one of the designers he/she represents they will call me back for another casting, if I do get booked, I would then be called back for a fitting and MAYBE meet the designer that I booked with. Now times that with 65-70 shows, along with some other castings that aren't for fashion week, it's a lot of running around. A typical casting goes as follows, you show up on time, not early, not late, right on time, sometimes they are w/other models and you have to wait, you go in meet them, show your book, walk for them, sometimes try on samples, take a few photos, answer some questions, say goodbye and go to the next one. The casting directors never let on as to how you did, or if they will call you back. I was interviewed by a reporter for Elle mag. online

street style, I was getting off the subway and they wanted a photo for street style so I will share that if I find it. It is my understanding that around 9/8 - 9/9 I should know if I booked any shows or jobs. I hope this answers some of your questions and gives you some insite about modeling. Another thought, I really appreciate all the places that leave out fruit etc. I eat a lot of apples here, they seem to be exceptionally good, maybe that's why they call this "the big apple"?

It was nice to go home, celebrate my sweet 16, and get things in order for school. I am back in NY with my school books in tow. I joke about talking to Coco Rocha on this blog because I am a huge fan of hers, well I met her, live and in person, yep, very cool, I am even a bigger fan now. I also went to Bryant park and things are being set up for fashion week. I often mention how much I love school and I do, but make no mistake about it, I LOVE FASHION! Anyone who doubts that should have seen my reaction when my mom said she could sell my Salvatore Ferragamo shoes that I had just purchased for $5.00 at a thrift store on ebay for quite a bit more. I was so stunned by her comment, it was as if she wanted to cut off an appendage. Fashion makes history and the history of fashion is so interesting. Fashion has been influenced by many different world events. Take Woodstock for instance. What a statement the people of Woodstock made. Half a million people, gather peacefully, wearing headbands, tie dye, very little or nothing at all. This group sent a message to the world, a message of peace that was definitely heard. The influence on the fashion world by "hippies" as they were and still are called has reinvented itself through out the years. The suits of the 70's were less tailored and more casual, probably a direct result of the "hippie scene" of the 60's. You can basically take any world event and connect it to the fashion world.

Designers have visions that they put together sometimes many times over before it is just right. When you realize the history, stories, reasons, THE WORK that goes into these lines that you are about to see at fashion week it is truly amazing. As a model running around from casting to casting, worrying about getting the rhythm of my walk right with blisters on my feet and the clock telling me it's time to be at the next place, I hope to always remember what an honor it is to get to try on these pieces that will become a part of history. If I do show them, I hope the message, style, statement, emotion, that the designer intended for the world to see is indeed seen.

Modeling and "The Waiting Game"

1. my little friend helped me w/my candles, such a little angel! 2. & 3. behind the scenes at shoots, watch my port on elite to see the final outcome of these shots if you want, it's kind of fun to see this and the finished product.
I've been home for a week or so. I slowly watch photo's pop up on the elite NY site from shoots I did while I was there. Most of the shoots in NY were natural, no make up (most, some had make up). So what happens now is I wait to see if anyone is interested in me for fashion week, or something else. Luckily for me the time goes by fast. I am preparing for school and busy working odd jobs and enjoying summer

with my family and friends. I met a lot of nice girls in NY that are with elite too. It's exciting for me to see their photo's come through and watch them work. Some of you might know I LOVE school. Well I met a model (I don't like to mention names w/out permission), but she was really nice, and she LOVES school too. She is quite the inspiration to me. She has done some brilliant work, and she has TURNED DOWN, a terrific offer. Yes you read that correctly, she turned down a job to take a test at school. She told me that everyone understood and that school is really important. It was a relief to know that she still works, and is a very busy model that puts school work first. I think it's important to have something you love besides modeling because it keeps you busy when you're waiting to hear about work, and there's a lot of

waiting. Thank you to that special group (you know who you are) that sent me BEAUTIFUL

flowers for my Sweet 16! I also want to thank all the people I shot or met with in NY. I am still

new to this and I appreciate the kindness, and patience shown to me. One of the best parts of modeling is meeting people. Stylists, photographers, make up artists can be really, REALLY,

fun. I feel fortunate to meet such talented people and when I think of them I smile because of their senses of humor........thanks again, I hope you all know how special you are, it's a gift to people when you make them laugh! XO, Nicole

I am still in NY. I am busy going around doing what models do and then seeing some sites if I have time. There is a feeling in this city, a busy energy with a lot of exciting things going on. I must take just a minute to say how nice and helpful the people here have been. New Yorkers are off to do important things everyday. There are A LOT of different things one could do here. I just really appreciate the nice people I have met here that don't mind taking a minute and giving directions or advice on what to go see. I am really enjoying the city and feel grateful to be here!

I am discussing going to elite NY. I am excited for this new opportunity. I am very curious to see

the everyday operations of elite NY model management. I am curious about where models live in NY. I am interested in the historical landmarks of any place I visit so NY won't be any different

and I hope to do some site seeing with my Dad while I'm there. I usually get an agenda from the agency right before I leave so I know where to go and what to bring. I definitely realize that a model needs to be very flexible when it comes to time management. I need to be able to leave at a moments notice. My agent will say this is what we'd like to have happen, but because in this business there aren't any guarantees you never know exactly what's going to happen. I want to go to NY and get some work. I will keep you posted. Feel free to give me any tips if you're a seasoned model with advice, hindsights 20/20, "Coco", "Coco" can you hear me.......lol.

The Laundry Shoot

I have a friend named Erin. Erin discovered me in a mall and got me into the fashion business.

I love Erin, she helps me a lot, with everything from walking, photos, photomovement and is

just a really great support to me and my parents. Erin suggested I get a friend to do a photo shoot with as it often helps a model to pose better if she gets behind the camera and sees for herself what works and looks good. I asked my sister Chloe to do this with me. Chloe is one of the funniest people I know. She has a gift for being able to make anyone laugh their heads off. Anyway our Mom asked us to do the laundry so I thought we'd kill two birds with one stone. We cranked the music as that helps w/photo movement too. I like to share and pass on anything I learn to newcomers like myself. So find a friend and have your own photoshoot, if you get one

great shot out of many than the shoot was a success! Have fun!

We're back from Los Angeles, where the weather was WARM :) I did 9 photo shoots in 7 days.

Each photo shoot had a group of talented people. I feel fortunate that they shared their time

and talents with me. I will post photo's as I can. Hopefully they will inspire those of you who

love fashion, styling, hair, make up, photography and design. Take a peek (google Neil Sharum Photography, click on his model mayhem). As the evening rolled in on the 9th and last shoot(Solmaz Saberi Photography ), I started yawning, DURING THE SHOOT (OOPS), those involved in the shoot realized I was tired and started yawning at me to make me yawn....ha :) thanks!, so while some of the expressions on my face may look cool, I was trying to control my yawns while they were laughing and trying to make me yawn and laugh.........fun times. I also thought it would be fun to go home from that shoot w/hair/ make up so my Aunt Cheryl could see it, well, I fell right to sleep when I got in the car and showed up at Aunt Cheryl's looking like last nights Prom Queen, HA!

Last night I was in a show right here in my hometown. All proceeds from the show

went to the local Animal Shelter. The show was put on by my friend Cole Newcomb, he did a

GREAT job! The show was a success and a lot of fun, Thanks Cole!

In every business there's the good, the bad and the ugly. As a newcomer to the modeling world

I am asked, well my mom is asked, "why would you let her do that, that business is full of drugs,

eating disorders, creeps without morals"? Those are all real concerns, concerns that parents and kids should know ARE in your world too, not just the world of modeling. But since

we are talking about modeling I am going to tell my experience. I have much to learn, am totally new to this business. First I was scouted by an agency that turned out to be very professional. Their first concerns aside from how I look were; my age, my gpa, my family life, they prefer I have a chaperone at all times. They work around my school schedule. They gave me a book explaining the importance of nutrition & health care. Drugs, alcohol, eating disorders are not tolerated, you get dropped, you break contract, you're done. Oh and back to how I look, in this business it obviously helps to have the right genetic make up, tall, thin, BTW I am naturally thin, I eat A LOT!! I do my part as far as skin care, eating right & exercising go, but MUCH of the beauty credit goes to the PHOTOGRAPHERS, they make the model look sooooooo great. I feel lucky everytime I am invited to work. Like I said I am new to this so I don't know much. I do know the agent I have is so kind, like a big brother. Everyone else I have met and worked with have been very positive and have made me feel good about being me. I would LOVE to hear your thoughts about this business, Your experiences, Your Questions. Happy New Year! 2008 was a crazy year. I've learned a lot about

modeling and the fashion industry and I have A LOT more to learn,

I'm working on it. There are so many people I'd like to meet, some

models, some scouts, some authors (I can't read enough). I plan on

continuing to volunteer with Libraries and help others to have the

opportunity to read that we have, and to work and travel as much

as I can.
